Have you ever looked at the star filled night sky and felt like a speck in a huge universe? Have you been amazed by the mighty waves of the ocean and tried to see beyond it’s horizon? Maybe you’ve been captivated by the majesty of a mountain that sits unmoved. I have looked at these things and felt small in comparison. Yet God didn’t see the human being, you and I as insignificant but rather as His masterpiece, created in His own image.
When the Lord made the earth, He knew something was missing and so He made man. He gave this man power and rule over everything else He had made. That is why the ocean is powerful, and its waves untamed but man has not been limited by its power. We have navigated and conquered it through our inventions: boats, ships, submarines. Not only that, but we have studied it’s currents and the numerous life it contains within its waters.
When we look at the magnitude of the sky and the stars that fill it at night, we’ve been granted the ability to study and learn from them. They tell us of their hidden wonders and purpose. We have not even been limited by how far away the are, and we have gone and explored the outer space where they are.
In Psalm 8, David talks about how great and majestic God is and how it’s reflected in and through His creation. Nature is one of my favorites ways to truly meditate and delight in the majesty and glory of God. He was so intentional in everything He made, each thing serving a purpose in this world. Yet He chose us to have the power and rule over it.
“With great power, comes great responsibility.” – Uncle Ben (from Spiderman)
God gave us this power over His creation but are we doing good with what has been entrusted to us? Or are we taking advantage? Are we caring for it? Or are we using and abusing His creation? This is a huge matter, especially right now when we are seeing the after effects of abuse over the authority we were given. The earth is responding back and we are the ones losing. We need to turn back and take care of what we have been given, Earth and all its creation. It’s our responsibility.
O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. 2 You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength,[b] silencing your enemies and all who oppose you.
3 When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place— 4 what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?[c] 5 Yet you made them only a little lower than God[d] and crowned them[e] with glory and honor. 6 You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority— 7 the flocks and the herds and all the wild animals, 8 the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and everything that swims the ocean currents.
