"About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It’s a ghost!” But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,”Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?”
Matthew 14: 25-31
Peter had faith to step out of the boat and walk towards Jesus, but something happened between him getting out of the boat and getting to Jesus. He took his eyes off the One who called him out, and began to look at the circumstances around him. They filled him with fear and doubt, which cause him to begin to sink.
In my life I have heard the words, "Come to me" from God like Peter did, and I got out the boat, but I have also been like Peter and taken my eyes off Jesus for a second and allowed the circumstances around me to sink me in worry, fear and doubt. Then like Peter, I find myself shouting "Help me God, save me, get me out this mess!" and like Jesus did with Peter, he "immediately" comes to our rescue. Then He asked us the same "why did you doubt me?"
Has God called you out of the boat? Has He asked you to step out in faith? If He has, keep your eyes on Him. He isn't calling you out to danger, but to His security. He is calling you to Him. Don't let the circumstance around you deviate your focus, just keep looking towards Him. Know that even if you do, like Peter and myself, He will "immediately" be there to save you. He won't let you drown but will be quick to rescue you.
Lord keep my eyes on you, the Author and Perfector of my faith, knowing that it doesn't matter the hurricane of problems around me, You will keep me safe and afloat. Help me when my eyes deviate from you and fear, doubt and worry make me sink. Forgive me for looking away and doubting you. I trust and know that You will rescue me.
